James Cherry is a screenwriter, author, and a US marine that attended Virginia Military Institute where he helped write the play Brother Rat with his fellow classmate Fred Finklehoffe which was published in 1937, and eventually sold to Warner Brothers Entertainment. During his time in duty Cherry and Louis de Rochemont wrote We Are The Marines. After serving in the 3rd Marine Regiment during the Bougainville campaign Cherry returned to the United States to write Knock on Any Door (published in 1949), The People Against O’Hara (1962), as well as The House on 92nd Street (1962). The House on 92nd Street was successful winning Mr. Cherry the Edgar Allen Poe Award. Later in Mr. Cherry’s life touched in directing and acting. James Cherry was born in Pleasantville, New York on February 24, 1910 and died on December 10, 2004 in Pacific Palisades, California.
